“If there was anything could be done to bring him back…”
He hadn’t meant it. Oh, he hadn’t wanted Jack to die, and felt sorrow at his loss. But he’d also felt the sting of betrayal, and a vicious sense of justice served as he’d watched captain and ship be pulled to the depths. A man who he had considered a friend, but most recently had blithely used Will’s life to save his own and had apparently stolen the heart of Will’s fiancée.
Will had no desire for Jack Sparrow to come back on the scene any time soon.
But his Elizabeth – despite her betrayal, she still held his heart, for hadn’t she just broken it? – seemed to be of quite a different mind. And what better way to start winning her back than by demonstrating understanding, rather than bitterness? She would mourn, find her solace in his embrace, and then they could come together again.
If he had been less caught up in his swirling feelings of betrayal, grief, and wounded love, perhaps he’d have realized voicing such a sentiment in the presence of a witch was not wise. If he’d been less focused on winning Elizabeth back. If he’d been able to let her endure her pain – which she, in some part, deserved – rather than indulging his need to assuage it, despite his own hurt.
Cold spray hit his face, and he heard a guttural cry issuing commands from the helm.
He hadn’t been any of those things, and so here he was: on board a mystical ship captained by a recently-resurrected pirate, sailing towards unknown dangers off the edge of the map in order to retrieve the man that Will wanted to see least in the world.
He should’ve kept his mouth shut.
